I've been reading a lot of fanfiction lately - mostly in the Doctor Who archives - and when I was catching up on my favorite pair (Doctor/Master), I find that nearly no body actually tries to follow the Doctor's past when writing their relationship. They usually hook up during the Academy days and run away on a TARDIS, having honky-dory happy sex and work together to fix the Master's head.

Those writers claim this to be in-character.

...ugh.

The Doctor, as said by the Ninth, had a wife and kid(s), grandchildren (First) even, on Gallifrey! There could have been no chance for a relationship to start (except maybe in their Academy years since they spent decades there, but it would have been interrupted with the Doctor getting married). If he took them with him during his renegade travels or didn't see them again until Gallifrey's last moments is left unsaid.

to be edited when felt like it.
